A cyberattack on Ascension health system caused disruptions in 19 states, forcing ambulance diversions and delays to medical tests. The health system detected “unusual activity” on its systems, straight away choosing to stop sharing electronic medical records and online scheduling. Some suspect the attack to be ransomware, but Ascension officials have not confirmed this. Recent attacks on healthcare systems have increased, especially involving ransomware that paralyzes networks and their threat to make stolen data public.
