Gene therapy has emerged as a promising solution for inherited or chronic skin diseases, offering an alternative to topical creams, drugs and surgery. Rather than managing symptoms, gene therapy targets the root cause of the disease with hopes of presenting a lasting solution. It has only been applied for a few diseases like epidermolysis bullosa to date, but researchers are exploring additional possibilities. Despite the promise of gene therapy, there are still challenges to overcome, limiting its broader application in dermatology.
