Financial malware on the rise as espionage attacks decline

Research by security firm Mandiant indicates an increase in financially motivated malware attacks, with actors increasingly targeting unsecured data and stolen credentials for profit. The study found 8% of malware infections in 2024 were intended as espionage attacks, down from 10% in 2023. While espionage is not declining, private threats are growing, with actors targeting known vulnerabilities and using infostealer malware. Stolen credentials were used in 16% of intrusions, up from 10% the previous year.
