Research by security firm Mandiant indicates an increase in financially motivated malware attacks, with actors increasingly targeting unsecured data and stolen credentials for profit. The study found 8% of malware infections in 2024 were intended as espionage attacks, down from 10% in 2023. While espionage is not declining, private threats are growing, with actors targeting known vulnerabilities and using infostealer malware. Stolen credentials were used in 16% of intrusions, up from 10% the previous year.

System intrusions were responsible for 80% of data breaches in the Asia-Pacific region in 2025, according to Verizon’s Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR). The study
