Hackers are turning DNA sequencing into a biosecurity nightmare

A study by the University of Portsmouth warned of security vulnerabilities in next-generation DNA sequencing (NGS). With millions globally having their genomes sequenced, advancing medical treatment, data security risks have emerged, including identity theft and bioweapon development. The researchers urged the need for genetic data protection not simply through encryption, but in anticipation of future threats, and called for increased cross-sector collaboration to mitigate these risks.
