New payment-card scam involves a phone call, some malware and a personal tap

Italian cybersecurity firm Cleafy has warned financial firms of a scam that employs social engineering and malware to exploit near-field communication (NFC) functionality. The trick, which targets Android phones, uses text messages to scare victims into calling the fraudsters, who steal data and manipulate account settings. Agnostic of banks, the tactic affects all cards. Dubbed SuperCardX, the malware can exploit NFC to verify card details, and is thought to originate from a Chinese malware-as-a-service provider.
