“Slopsquatting” attacks are using AI-hallucinated names resembling popular libraries to spread malware

Security researchers have warned that cybercriminals may abuse Generative AI (GenAI) to engage in ‘slopsquatting’, a type of cybercrime. Various AI tools like Chat-GPT, Copilot can hallucinate or fabricate open-source software package names that don’t exist. Cybercriminals could then register these fictional packages on open-source platforms, potentially containing malware. If a developer incorporates such a suggested package into their product, they could unknowingly install malicious software.
