What Makes Modern Measles Outbreaks Different

An outbreak of measles in the US is following an unusual pattern, with adults being affected in significant numbers. Researchers warn adults are increasingly susceptible to the disease due to low vaccination rates, with the severity and fatality of measles increasing with age. Measles can also induce ‘immune amnesia’, making those affected by the disease vulnerable to other infections. Immunisation rates have dropped to 92.7%, dangerously close to the measles herd-immunity threshold of 92 to 94%.
