Cybercriminals are exploiting Captchas, symbols of online security, to trick users into downloading malicious software, warns the Bundesamt für Sicherheit und Informationstechnik (BSI). This new scam involves deploying fake Captcha pages on compromised websites, which copy malicious commands to the clipboard and can lead malware to permeate users’ systems unknowingly. These scams have seen a notable increase since late 2024, according to the Swiss Federal Office of Cybersecurity. Experts advise users to close their browsers immediately if they encounter suspicious Captchas.
