Nursing homes get help assessing pain, anxiety in nonverbal residents

The Utilizing Palliative Leaders in Facilities to Transform care for people with Alzheimer’s Disease (UPLIFT-AD) research team, led by Dr. Kathleen Unroe and Dr. John Cagle, are seeking to address gaps in palliative care by revamping a symptom assessment tool. Its goal is to improve the detection of distress in non-verbal patients suffering from cognitive impairments. In addition, Unroe emphasizes the necessity of integrating assessments into existing EHRs through workflow optimization and staff training.
