Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a method to convert skin cells directly into neurons, bypassing the induced pluripotent stem cell stage. This could potentially lead to therapies for spinal cord injuries or other neurodegenerative diseases. The team achieved the direct conversion using three transcription factors and two genes, managing a 10-30% conversion rate in human cells.
