Northwestern Memorial HealthCare in Chicago uses a “gig” model for nurses, where experienced nurses take on six- to 13-week assignments throughout the organization. According to Chief Nursing Officer Kristin Ramsey, this allows the organization to fill anticipated staffing gaps and maintain patient care continuity. However, Ramsey admitted they’re facing nurse shortage issues due to workforce competition, uneven retirement and recruitment rates, and a need for more flexible work options.
