The Satori Threat Intelligence team of HUMAN Security has discovered an advanced malware campaign called “BADBOX 2.0” that compromised more than 50,000 Android devices, including TVs, tablets, projectors, and vehicle infotainment systems, via 24 fraudulent applications. The malware targeted mostly inexpensive “off-brand” Android Open Source Project devices and was carried out by four threat groups launching multiple fraud initiatives, including ad fraud and click fraud. To combat this threat, Google has added warnings about the BADBOX behaviour to Google Play Protect and also blocked associated publisher accounts.
