A new variant of the Vo1d malware botnet has infected nearly 1.6 million Android TV devices across 226 countries. According to an investigation by Xlab, the botnet, which uses encrypted devices as part of anonymous proxy server networks, has 800,000 active bots. The largest infections affect Brazilian users, followed by South Africa, Indonesia, Argentina, Thailand, and China. The botnet’s operators might lease devices as proxy servers, leading to sharp fluctuations in infected counts. The Vo1d botnet can be used for ad fraud and illegal operations.
