Alabama Man Pleaded Guilty for Hacking U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission X Account

Eric Council Jr., 25, pleaded guilty to hacking the SEC’s X account in January 2024, using a SIM swap attack. His fraudulent post falsely announced Bitcoin ETF approvals, causing a Bitcoin price spike before a sharp drop. Council received $50,000 in Bitcoin for his role. He faces up to five years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for May 2025.
