Data breaches in UK legal sector jump 39% as external threats rise

Data breaches in the UK’s legal sector increased by 39% in 2024 with nearly 2,300 incidents, exposing 7.9 million individuals’ data, according to NetDocuments. Such breaches, half within firms, resulted from phishing attacks and human errors like failure to redact information and sharing data with wrong people. Personal info, financial data, health records and official documents were main types of breached data. Non-cyber incidents made up the majority of 3,003 data incidents recorded by the ICO in Q3 2024.
