Britain at ‘severe’ risk of cyber attacks as tech workers shun Whitehall

The UK government has been criticised for underpaying cybersecurity staff, which has led to talent being drawn to the private sector. This risks the government failing to reinforce its “critical functions” against the threat of cyberattacks by 2025, the National Audit Office (NAO) warned. A shortage of cyber skills has exacerbated vulnerability to attacks, with an assessment in 2024 revealing 58 critical government IT systems with significant cybersecurity gaps.
