UnitedHealth-owned health tech company Change Healthcare had experienced a ransomware attack in February 2024, affecting about 190 million Americans. The company, which processes billing and insurance for several hospitals and medical practices, had to shut down its network due to the security breach which started around February 12. A ransomware gang named ALPHV was found to be the culprit, disappearing after a $22 million ransom was paid. The company informed millions of individuals by mail about data theft, while a public notice was also published.
