The BlackCat ransomware group attacked UnitedHealth subsidiary, Change Healthcare, in February 2024, compromising the data of 190 million individuals. The breach, one of the largest in US history, caused disruptions in the healthcare system, affecting pharmacies and delaying the processing of health claims. Change Healthcare paid a $22m ransom to retrieve the stolen data, but some was still leaked online and the hackers demanded further payments. UnitedHealth suffered estimated losses of $2 billion.
