Scientists have used microbial cell factories to improve the production of scarce plant hormones known as strigolactones. These factories can produce strigolactone yields 125 times higher than before, reducing the need for laborious extraction methods and large quantities of plant material. Strigolactones are important in controlling plant development and relationships with soil microbes and the development of parasitic plants. This breakthrough could enable greater study of these hormones and other scarce plant molecules.
