NIH director to step down ahead of Trump inauguration

Monica Bertagnolli, Director of National Institutes of Health (NIH), will resign on January 17 after just a year in the role. She cited several initiatives launched under her leadership and expressed hope that they will be continued. Amid bipartisan criticism over the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, Bertagnolli worked to counter proposed changes to the organization’s structure. President-Elect Trump has nominated health economist Jay Bhattacharya as her replacement.
