OCR Announces Proposed Updates to HIPAA Security Rule, Raises the Bar for Healthcare Cybersecurity | Husch Blackwell LLP

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has proposed updates to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Security Rule to improve cybersecurity for electronic health information. In the first amendments since 2013, updates include obligatory implementation of security requirements, annual compliance audits, enhanced administrative measures, improved technology safeguards and changes to business relationships. Public comments on the proposals are requested before March 7, 2025.
