How do Medicaid Home Care Programs Support Family Caregivers?

4.5 million Americans use Medicaid home care, with many self-directing their services and even employing family caregivers. However, possible reductions in Medicaid spending could impact the ability of states to continue supporting home care. All states except Alaska, Florida, Indiana, and Utah allow home care patients to self-direct their care. Additionally, all reporting states pay family caregivers under certain circumstances and provide support, such as respite care. Services are most commonly available for caregivers of those with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
