Potential New Obesity Target Found in Mitochondrial Protein Involved in Brown Fat Thermogenesis

Scientists at Spain’s National Cancer Research Centre have identified a protein called MCJ which may have potential use in obesity treatments. The team discovered that removing the MCJ protein from obese mice meant they produced more heat and lost weight. Transplants of fat which lacked MCJ into other mice led to similar results. The researchers concluded that MCJ has a role in the regulation of thermogenesis, the process by which brown fat maintains body temperature. MCJ could be targeted to tackle obesity if the protein is non-vital in other tissues.
