German carmaker Volkswagen is investigating a data leak at its software subsidiary Cariad which exposed the personal data and geolocation of about 800,000 electric vehicle (EV) owners. Cars from VW, Audi, Seat, and Skoda were affected by the breach across several countries. Detailed movement patterns of vehicles displayed on Amazon cloud servers without adequate protection could allow criminals to create profiles of individuals’ daily activities. Volkswagen says there is no indication the data has been maliciously used.
