Plain language announcements can improve hospital staff response to nonclinical emergencies better than coded messages, according to a study from Cleveland Clinic. When a coded emergency announcement was used, no participant could fully understand it, whereas response was significantly better with plain language. The findings support calls for hospitals to adopt plain language systems.
