New Watering Hole Attack That Used Fake Adobe Flash Player Update To Deliver Malware

Cybersecurity threats are increasingly exploiting public assets such as VPNs and firewalls, but traditional attack vectors like phishing emails, malicious websites, and social engineering are still dangerous. A Japanese university’s research lab was compromised in 2023 through a watering hole attack, demonstrating the vulnerability of academic institutions. Attackers manipulated users into manually downloading malware disguised as an Adobe flash player update, bypassing traditional vulnerability exploitation methods. The malware could possibly execute malicious activities on the infected system.
