The US District Court in Oakland has found Israeli surveillance firm NSO Group Technologies liable for hacking Meta’s WhatsApp using its military-grade malware Pegasus. The court determined that NSO violated the Computer Fraud & Abuse Act, and Comprehensive Computer Data Access & Fraud Act by sending malicious messages through WhatsApp to target users. The court will now only proceed on the issue of damages in WhatsApp v. NSO.
