New US bill seeks improved cybersecurity for smaller hospitals

In 2023, US hospitals experienced a 128% increase in ransomware attacks. These cyberattacks disrupt critical medical procedures and patient care. In response, Rep. Robin Kelly proposed the Healthcare Cybersecurity Improvement Act to boost cybersecurity preparedness, particularly in smaller hospitals most at risk. The bill proposes a $100m grant program for cybersecurity measures in small to medium hospitals, mandates basic cybersecurity standards, and offers liability protection to larger healthcare systems offering assistance to smaller counterparts.
