Russian cyberespies, Gamaredon, reportedly part of Russia’s Federal Security Agency, have been using two Android spyware named ‘BoneSpy’ and ‘PlainGnome’ to target Russian-speaking individuals in former Soviet states. BoneSpy collects SMS messages, records audio, accesses user’s web browsing history, extracts contact details, among other features. The newer malware, PlainGnome, is stealthier and uses advanced features to reduce detection risks. Lookout, who discovered the spyware, noted that neither of them has so far been found on Google Play.
