As many as 50 million Americans experience long-term chronic pain, a condition that now appears to result from oversensitivity of the amygdala, the brain’s threat-detection center, rather than physical damage. Touch therapy, practiced by chiropractors, has been found to retrain the amygdala, diminishing its overactive response. Despite evidence proving its efficacy, non-pharmacological treatments for pain remain underused.
