Researchers Detailed Tools Used By Hacktivists Fueling Ransomware Attacks

The politically motivated hacktivist group CyberVolk has launched DDoS and ransomware attacks against targets opposing Russian interests. They use ransomware builders like AzzaSec, Diamond, LockBit, and Chaos, then modify these tools to increase sophistication and difficulty of tracking. CyberVolk primarily targets entities in countries allied with Russia, with attacks ranging from ransomware to defacements. A recent focus has been to target Japanese government agencies and research institutions, as part of their “#OpJP” campaign.
