Chinese state-sponsored hacking group, Salt Typhoon, has been using a new “GhostSpider” backdoor in attacks against telecommunications providers. Discovered by cybersecurity firm Trend Micro, the group has used the backdoor to tap into private communications of US government officials and breach the systems of US telecoms operators including Verizon, AT&T, Lumen Technologies and T-Mobile. In addition to GhostSpider, Salt Typhoon also utilizes a Linux backdoor named ‘Masol RAT’, a rootkit named ‘Demodex’, and a modular backdoor named ‘SnappyBee’.
