New Cybersecurity Bill Targets Health Sector Weaknesses

Senators Ron Wyden and Mark Warner introduced the Health Infrastructure Security and Accountability Act (HISAA) in response to recent cybersecurity incidents in the health care sector. The Act calls for increased security measures for HIPAA Covered Entities and Business Associates, including ongoing risk assessments and audits, new penalties for non-compliance, and incentives for adopting improved cybersecurity practices. It would bring a new enforcement and oversight structure, drastically different from the current HIPAA regulations.
