Keeping 300,000 out of hospitals through AI

Australia’s national health service provider, Healthdirect, successfully implemented an AI-powered clinical decision support system (CDSS) to augment its helpline services. This improved tool, created by Polish firm Infermedica, enables better alignment with patient symptoms and risk factors, leading to more accurate triage. Despite initial resistance, nurses have broadly accepted the new system after adjustments based on feedback. The tool increased customer satisfaction scores and enabled the diversion of half of emergency calls to less acute services over the past year.
