Scientists at Washington State University conducted tests with young players using both wooden and metal bats. Despite recognising performance differences between the bat types, they concluded that a batter’s skill remains the dominant factor affecting ball speed. Metal bats were favoured due to their durability and ease of control, however, a faster swing does not necessarily equate to a faster hit ball. The study has been published in the Journal of Sports Engineering and Technology.
