Scientists at Rutgers University have discovered that a protein produced by intestinal parasite Heligmosomoides polygyrus – the Helminth protein – can accelerate wound healing in mice, according to a paper published in Life Science Alliance. The TGF-β mimic protein, once applied to skin wounds, was found to improve skin regeneration and inhibit scarring. Future research will need to investigate whether the protein can assist wound healing in humans.
