A type of drug made for cancer treatment may be promising for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Research led by Pennsylvania State and Stanford Universities found that blocking the indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1) enzyme in mice models of AD restored metabolism in brain astrocytes, rescuing memory and brain function. Now, the IDO1 inhibitors being developed to treat cancer may be repurposed for early treatment of AD and other neurodegenerative diseases.
