Maternal Health Crisis: Lack of Access to Care “Doesn’t Paint the Whole Picture,” Expert Says

US black women die three times more often from pregnancy-related conditions compared with white women, a disparity which does not stem from lack of access to care, according to Bayo Curry-Winchell. Speaking at a forum called A New Era in Women’s Health Research, she said the maternal health crisis was fuelled by factors including unconscious bias, systemic racism, racial discrimination and clinician bias.
