NHS cyber security: Ex security chief warns of future attacks

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) is at risk from repeated cyber attacks unless it upgrades its IT systems, warns Ciaran Martin, the founding CEO of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre. The ageing NHS IT infrastructure results in 13.5 million wasted hours each year due to obsolete systems. The Russian hacking group Qilin, believed to be part of a Kremlin-protected cyber army, targeted and demanded a £40m ransom from the NHS in a June cyber attack, which saw more than 4,900 appointments and 1,391 operations delayed.
