The biggest data breach fines, penalties, and settlements so far

The Ireland Data Protection Commission fined Meta $277 million in November 2022 for compromising 500 million users’ personal information. In August 2021, Facebook-owned WhatsApp was fined $255 million for GDPR cross-border data protection infringements. Home Depot has reportedly paid roughly $200 million due to a data breach in 2014, while Capital One agreed to pay $190 million to settle a class-action lawsuit regarding a 2019 data breach. Other prominent fines include $148 million for Uber in 2018 and $120 million for Morgan Stanley in 2022.
