A bipartisan group of US senators has proposed a bill to remove barriers to telemental healthcare for Medicare beneficiaries. The bill intends to eliminate the need for patients to have an in-person appointment within six months of receiving telehealth services. This requirement was labelled “arbitrary” and potentially limiting to patients in rural communities. The proposal comes amid the pending expiration of coronavirus-related telehealth flexibilities for Medicare at year-end without legislative intervention.
