By mid-December 2023, over 170,000 people in nursing facilities died due to COVID-19. A new rule from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services could introduce staffing level requirements in such facilities. Currently, just 19% of facilities meet the required registered nurse and nurse aide hours, with lower rates at for-profit establishments (10%) compared to non-profit and government facilities (40%). However, the number of nursing facilities and their residents decreased by 4% and 12% respectively from 2015 to 2023.
