What is a massive open online course (MOOC)?

A massive open online course (MOOC) is a web-based distance learning program designed for large numbers of dispersed students. Typically free, MOOCs are hosted on learning management systems and cover a range of subjects, delivering content via video lectures, readings, quizzes and discussion forums. These courses, which surged in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, offer certificates for learning but rarely offer academic credits. Main providers include universities and corporations, hosted on platforms like EdX, Canvas and Coursera.
