The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has fined Equifax more than £11m ($15.3m) for failing to protect data of almost 14 million UK customers during a 2017 cybersecurity breach. The breach, which the FCA said was wholly avoidable, compromised customers’ names, birth dates, addresses, some credit card details and phone numbers. Equifax added to the issue by mishandling the data breach response. The credit reporting agency was awarded a 30% reduction for agreeing to end the matter and for its investigatory cooperation.
