A third of UK pharmacies are operating without a permanent pharmacist due to a surge in recruitment for non-doctor roles in GP practices. The shortage is threatening NHS plans to use pharmacies for traditional GP tasks under the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS), which this year allocated £890 million for GPs to hire non-medical professionals. Nearly half of the ARRS funding is being spent on clinical pharmacists, according to a former health minister.
