Experts weigh in on China’s respiratory virus surge

China’s present respiratory illness outbreak, similar to last year’s COVID-19, flu, and respiratory syncytial virus peak in the US, is likely caused by the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, rather than a new virus, according to experts. As China lifted measures later than other countries, it experiences its first full winter without tight measures. The WHO attributed the rise in respiratory diseases in China to known viruses and mycoplasma pneumoniae.
