The average cost of data breaches in the US reached $4.45 million in 2023, an increase of 2.3% from 2022 and 15.3% since 2020, according to IBM Security statistics. The findings, based on breaches at 553 organizations in 16 countries across 17 industries, reveal 67% were reported by benign third parties or the attackers themselves, resulting in costs nearly $1 million higher than those detected internally. Of all industries, insurance saw the biggest rise in data breach costs with a 53.3% increase since 2020 to an average of $10.93 million.
