Mozi malware botnet goes dark after mysterious use of kill-switch

The Mozi malware botnet was mysteriously deactivated in August 2023 after an unknown party triggered a kill switch. Mozi, a widespread DDoS malware botnet established in 2019, targeted IoT devices and operated via a decentralized peer-to-peer network. The origin of the kill switch payload, which closely resembles the original Mozi code, is unknown. Despite Mozi’s deactivation, other DDoS malware botnets persist, prompting users to continually update device security.
