Excel is releasing an update for Windows and macOS to address an annoying feature that long bedeviled scientists: it automatically re-formatted their alphanumeric gene symbols as dates. This autocorrect feature could “ruin” a scientific study’s published, peer-reviewed data. The update includes a checkbox option that stops Excel from converting numbers and letters to a date, building on earlier data conversion settings.
