Why Is California’s Population Falling? Housing Costs

34% of Californians are mulling a move due to high housing costs, as per a report from the Public Policy Institute of California. This could see the state switch from rapid to slow growth. The report suggests California’s population could plateau at 39-40 million and that by 2030, seniors might outnumber children. Contributing factors include the falling fertility rate, outmigration, and an increasing number of high earners relocating.
